Ranking up in Hunters Hunted is not a matter of pure statistical calculation, but more a matter of role play, activity, and merit. We do not require Renown tracking, though it is recommended so Elders can maintain a general idea of where a character stands. Keeping track of Renown is up to the player and remains only one of many factors considered during rank challenges. Regardless of tracking, however, a character should occasionally undergo a Rite of Accomplishment to announce to their peers that they are making efforts to push towards a higher rank.
Renown is best described as a marker and suggestion of when it is an appropriate time for a character to challenge an elder for rank. High Renown does not guarantee any kind of success in a rank challenge, though it can (and should) inform Elders of character merit and the appropriate level of challenge difficulty. Keep in mind that Renown can be mitigated by other factors (such as length of time played, OOC attitude and conduct, etc.), so again, Renown-tracking is not the last word when it comes to gaining rank.
STs and OPs are not required to dole out Renown, but should be prepared to offer a suggestion for Renown awards or penalties concerning their scene(s) if asked. A ST's decision should be respected, but we realize that sometimes mature communication can not solve every argument, so please contact a OP for a final ruling in those circumstances.
Currently, our renown is outpacing our experience. As important as renown is for character accomplisment purposes, the sheet needs to match the rank. Its hard to justify a Elder with a Fostern sheet. Renown in a tabletop setting is handed out by the ST's at the end of a session. Here, we are allowing players to track it themselves and give our ST's a chance to review it before it is counted. But not all renown can be used. There is a general rule of renown that states one cannot claim the same action twice in one month for renown.
For instance, if you kill a bane every day for 7 days straight. You cannot claim that renown 7 times. It takes the glory out of the action and nullifies the purpose of tracking renown. Yes it can be claimed in other ways, but that comes in with some creative license.
See such resources as the Garou Renown Chart for more information concerning renown awards and penalties. Or ask your OP's if there are any questions.
