Packs lose Totem bonuses if any of the following happen: a ban is violated, the Garou do not have enough points to maintain the minimum amount needed for the Totem (through death or retirement of PC pack members), or the pack dips below 2 members for longer than a lunar cycle.
If a ban is violated by more than one Garou of the pack within a six month period (or the same Garou in the muitiple month period), the ST will determine if it is a minor or major ban. A minor violation involves the players involved performing Contrition to the spirit to pacify its anger or the acceptance of a minor ban temporarly. A major violation involves Contrition plus a quest in the totem's name. Note that a totem will get tired of violations and IC actions equals IC consequences, so repeat violations may result in the totem rejecting the pack. Be forewarned, this is ENTIRELY at ST discretion – Great Fenris might kick a pack to the curb after a single violation without stopping to listen to excuses, whereas Unicorn might forgive a pack multiple transgressions with atonement and good reasons underlying their actions.
Individuals of a pack may selectively lose bonuses if they perform violations against the totem. Treat the punishment system on the totem's behalf as above; with the most severe repeat offenders getting cast out of the pack. If no action is taken by the pack's alpha to correct the offender, the totem may also choose to punish the pack as a unit. This shouldn't need to be said, but falling to the Triat or major violations of Gaian principles (most totems do not punish for Litany violations outside of their ethos) such as allowing caerns to fall will cause the totem to immediately sever themselves from the offender.
Whether something is considered a major, minor, or not serious enough to be considered a violation will be determined by the ST team. Plot hooks, SL’s, and personal scenes all may figure into the decision, and when the decision is made the time for which the Totem holds his pack to task is also entirely up to the WtA Staff. A Totem such as Sphinx, for instance, might have a very long memory for such actions, whereas another totem like Twister might forget in a month. Don’t break bans unless you are ready for bad news and a burden to bear.
Packs with not enough totem points to maintain their Totem or have less than 2 members in a pack have a lunar month to make amends before the Totem takes his own action. During this time, they do not get bonuses but must maintain the ban of the totem. If they violate the ban again, the totem rejects the pack outright.
If a pack chooses the Totem to always be with them, the Totem will be able to use Charms to aid and help the pack in battle against the non Gaian enemies of the Garou. However, this presents a risk of a Totem being forced into Slumber due to a Totem's essence becoming 0. Slumbering totems cannot aid their packs. It is generally wise for packs to use their totems sparingly in combat and put them behind the Garou. (Fortunately, totems do Re-form.)
Totem points are gained and may be requested:
1) Upon a totem extending their patronage;
2) Upon addition of a member to the pack;
3) Upon performing a service for the totem (or regular service via Adoration depending on level), either by quest or deed,
4) Upon the pack's alpha achieving a new rank (pack alpha only).
When a totem first extends their patronage, Garou with less than 3 Totem points may spend XP up to a total of 3 Totem. This is the only time Garou can mass spend XP point to acquire multiple points of Totem. Garou with 3 or more may spend XP to gain an additional point only and only one at a time.
5 totem points maximum.
A pack may not have more than 10 living Garou at a time. A totem will begin to suggest a pack is growing too large to remain healthy at 9 Garou and a pack that attempts to add more than a tenth member may find it’s totem calling it to task to eliminate its weakest members. A pack that refuses may find any number of consequences developing, from a totem refusing the packs patronage to rejecting individual members it sees as weak or improper to challenges for retaining members to quests to identify weak links. Note that your totem calling you to task for ignoring it’s desires may very well lead to a loss of renown (wisdom).
