Name: Child of Gaia
Plural: Children of Gaia
Pronounciation: chill'-drun uv' gahy'-uh
Totem:
Unicorn: Totem of Wisdom. Totem Spirit to the Children of Gaia, unicorn stands for innocence and purity, but also stands for healing, unity and chivalry. She is the embodiment of the blissful and encompassing love of Gaia. However, doesn't mean that she is a weak totem. Only to the ignorant and unexperienced is Unicorn a totem that seems weak. Old One Horn is called that for a reason, for she has a sharp horn, and even sharper hooves... Those who follow unicorn in packs are swifter than the norm, and can move doubly fast when running. Unicorn is a totem of healing and emotion And as such packs under her excel in things relating to them. All though they have problems when it comes to harming those who aren't of the Wyrm. Those who follow unicorn gain more Wisdom renown, and will always find dealings with the Children of Gaia to go along even smoother.
However, Unicorns children must protect the weak and exploited, as long as doing so doesn't aid the Wyrm.
Tales of the Tribe:
When the Wyrm claimed the hearts of the Garou, when the blood of the tribes was shed by the claws of their kin, the Children of Gaia arose to lead the Garou back to the Mother's bounty. They lifted the Impergium, pressed for peace amongst the tribes and spread the words of Gaia's love among the lands of humans. To the Children of Gaia, life is a gift to be savored, not a battle to be won. They are the unifiers of the Garou, the heralds of peace.
The Children of Gaia insist that embracing violence grants the Wyrm victory by default. Death is ever a part of life, they concede, but hatred is the gateway to the inner Wyrm, and must be avoided. Even the Children of Gaia disagree, however, about when the time for talking ends and the time for fighting begins. When they do choose to fight, the Children of Gaia are powerful warriors, strengthened by their commitment to the Mother. Until then, these Garou search for a way to resolve conflicts without bloodshed, curing instead of killing.
The tribe shares a vision of Gaia as a loving, bountiful Mother, and sees the Wyrm as the denial of her love. The Children rightly predicted that the Impergium would forever drive a wedge between humans and Garou, but the tribe seems at a loss before the coming Apocalypse. Its leaders still wish to negotiate with the humans and enlighten them before it is too late, but even then the most optimistic Children wonder if the time for peace is past.
The Children have been given three great secrets by Gaia:
All creatures who partake of the bounty Gaia freely offers become loving and generous, while those who heed the Wyrm and doubt that Gaia will provide for them become fear-ridden and stingy. Their fear and greed rule them, and drive them to acts of depravity. Depravity is a powerful weapon, for it kills empathy. The Depraved are cut off from the purest of Gaia's gifts: the connection to all life, and the simple ability to feel the joy and pain of one another. This depravity drives animals to kill their kin, Garou to slaughter their rivals' children, and Wyrm creatures to try to destroy all life. Depravity is a powerful weakness, for only in empathy can joy be found. Those lacking empathy lack the capacity for joy, and fell its loss deep in their hearts as an unending sadness. So they pursue idle diversions, seeking to be diverted from the sorrow in their souls. This weakness is the key to overcoming these foes. Rather than meet hostility with hostility, the Child of Gaia can transcend his own Rage and visit the Peace of Gaia upon his foes. By meting hatred with understanding and compassion, the Child of Gaia can replace anger with bliss, hate with joy, and war with peace. Their Gifts heal, protect and nurture rather than harm. They are deeply attuned to Gaia and all of Her splendor, and prefer to spend time contemplating harmony over havoc. When angered, however, they are terrible in their Rage. The Children are not ignorant of the Wyrm's capacity for destruction - they choose to confront it in their own way. While other Garou faced with a toxic waste dump spewing out Banes would simply kill the Banes and move on, a Child would likely arrange for a cleanup of the site to deprive the Banes of their source of strength, then track back to the source to work to change the corporation that made the mess in the first place. The human Kin of the Children are deeply enmeshed in politics, religion and education, working to educate and enlighten humanity in hopes of averting or at least diverting the Apocalypse.
Other Garou grant the Children of Gaia a grudging respect. Children are known as honorable peacekeepers, if a little soft in the head. They have proved right in the past, much to their rivals' annoyance, and radiate a deep faith in the Mother's love.
Appearance:
Children of Gaia are shaded mostly with gray or brown, with a dappling of white. Lupus-form Children do not loom menacingly in the way that other tribes do; they instead give off an aura of calm and safety.
Homelands:
The Children call no one place home; they travel to the places they are needed across the globe. They range from Calcutta to California. Their greatest concern is the welfare of humans subject to the depredations of the Wyrm; the Children of Gaia believe that they alone understand that the Wyrm will always take root in humans unless those humans are protected against it. Their Kinfolk tend to be unusually aware of social and environmental issues, and come from every nationality.
Tribal Homelands
When most people think of our tribal homeland, they think of it as too peaceful, sweet, and basically almost sickening. In fact, I’ve heard time and again how our Umbral homeland proves that we’re too peaceful to be true Garou. Well, they either haven’t been there or have only seen the cover of the homeland.
Now it’s true that all of Gaia’s creatures, great and small, are welcome to our homeland. On top of this, Unicorn grants one of her own brood to the defense of all Fera and Garou who enter the homeland. These Heart Guides, as we call them, represent the piece of that Fera or Garou within Unicorn. You will learn more of them when Unicorn's and her brood are spoken of, but let me speak of one legend. This legend of the Children of Gaia states that a Black Spiral Dancer was once brought to the homeland. Upon entering the homeland, a Heart Guide representing the good that must lurk somewhere within the twisted fur was formed, and with the help of the Heart Guide, the Children of Gaia were able to guide the Dancer back to Gaia. Yes, I see the bit of hope already sparkling in your eyes, along with a great deal of doubt. Your question would be if this worked, then why don’t we work to do it with all, or at least more Dancers. I’ll get this when I speak of the Wyrm. Am I not kind to leave you hanging?
Back to our homeland, even some humans live there and do not suffer from the Delirium. The grasslands roll to distant mountains and unicorns, both in groups and alone, can be seen and even befriended by the good and patient. The unicorns prove to be loyal and entertaining friends and certainly worth the work it takes to befriend one, if you ask me. Cares and worries of those who live in the homeland are seen to by Unicorn and her brood, giving our homeland the appearance of being a happy and rather “spineless” place as I once heard a Get phrase it.
Well they’re wrong. As the final days near, an ever growing storm lurks on the horizon around the mountains. Rumbles of thunder roll over the land, causing the occupants of our homeland to stir and murmur among themselves. On a ledge overlooking the grasslands and the mountains, Unicorn herself can be found time to time watching the storm as though looking for an omen of sorts. She’ll also take time occasionally to disappear off into the storm, during which the thunder and lightning of the storm grow all the more fierce. I took it on myself to seek her out once to ask her about the darkening storm. I learned that the storm is the running grounds of the Karkadan and the followers of this aspect of Unicorn. Through him, there is always a piece of Unicorn racing with rage that would amaze even the Get of Fenris. The strength of the storm is equal to that of the Rage of those running through it. As the Apocalypse nears, so will the storm grow with the rage of Unicorn and her brood. It never threatens the peace of the grasslands, but the distant thunder is a reminder of the coming war. If anyone doubts that you are a true warrior of Gaia, take them to run with you in the storm, let them feel Unicorn’s rage, and never let them forget that this rage fuels our drive.
Tribal Advantage:
Diplomacy: Because of their peace-loving nature, all Children of Gaia are able to build bridges were no one can hope to. Mending broken friendships, healing social wounds that others can not.
Tribal Disadvantage:
The Children of Gaia never participated in the Impergium to the extent that the other tribes did, and as a result, homids do not suffer the Delirium as seriously from the Children as they do from the other tribes. Humans are treated as though they are at a +4 on the Delirium chart for the purposes of their reaction to the Delirium when faced by one or more Children of Gaia. Note that the presence of Children of Gaia does not dampen homids’ reactions to the Delirium if other Garou are rampaging in clear sight.
Tribal Organization:
On the local level, the Children of Gaia operate by consensus, working together to forge solutions that are equitable to all involved (save minions of the Wyrm, who do not, contrary to the japes of other tribes, get a vote). At a Children of Gaia sept, the three leaders are the Voice of the Goddess (usually a veteran female), who acts as the policy-maker for the tribe; the Arm of the Goddess (usually a veteran male), who carries out the Voice’s decisions; and the Heart of the Goddess (a metis, or an elder beyond childbearing years), who acts as judge.
